This article examines two interrelated animal welfare topics: the transportation of pregnant cattle, and the collection of fetal bovine serum (FBS). The occurrence of pregnant cattle at slaughter is unavoidable because of health, management, and economic reasons, or because farmers may be unaware of their pregnancy status.

Biowest invites customers to follow a bottle and batch of serum back to the abattoirs and countries from where the raw serum was collected, and confirm the harvesting of raw serum forward to the finished batch of sterile serum. 


Animal welfare aspects relating to slaughter

European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) experts have completed a study which examined the animal welfare issues relating to the slaughter of pregnant farm animals in the European Union. This study gives a scientific opinion which increases the knowledge and understanding of these issues and ultimately, contributes to the improvement of Animal Welfare in Europe.
